A:
The Honeywell VR8204A2175 gas valve may be part of a system that has a thermocouple that is used to call for heat or have a signal that magnetically holds open the coil.  That would be dependent on the design of your system.  The Honeywell VR8204; VR4204 Intermittent Pilot Dual Automatic Valve Combination Gas Controls operation bulletin states that the "Solenoid-operated first automatic valve opens on thermostat call for heat and closes when call for heat ends."  Often a thermocouple is in a such applications. We always suggest having a qualified licensed technician review your application and verify if a thermocouple is required or used in your specific application.
